Overview: By using driven ragdolls that are able to follow animation and react believably to interactions, developers at EA/Frostbite have been able to push the physicality that their in-game characters have, while also being able to get emergent behaviors so that players are not just seeing the same animation over and over again, and do not need animators to increase animation coverage, which can bloat the animation database. This session will show the tricks EA/Frostbite developed when adding this tech to their titles such as improving animation follow, reducing complexity to gain performance, reducing potential bad output poses, feedback into the animation system and networking, and how they used ragdolls to generate procedural animations.
