Overview: | The Western indie scene is, for lack of a better description, cool. Indie developers from Europe and North America are rebels, underground icons breaking from the status quo, distributing their games via any number of reliable, popular distribution methods. The Western indie scene is experiencing a renaissance period of creativity, capturing the media headlines that were once reserved for AAA titles alone. In Japan it's almost the complete opposite. The Japanese indie scene by contrast suffers from a distinct lack of publishing channels, the game are mostly ignored by the mainstream media, the developers are --with a few notable exceptions-- mostly anonymous creators, and in Japan people equate the term "indie" with "amateur." This discussion focuses on how Japan's indie scene is finally experiencing its sea change. |
