Overview: The children's book, The Marvelous Land of Oz, published in 1904, features characters (including Jack Pumpkinhead and Sawhorse) who are made out of everyday objects and then brought to life using the magic "Dust of Life." These artificially created characters are compelling and endearing, but they always have something about them that makes it clear that they're not really alive. Today, 111 years later, technology has advanced in amazing ways and yet we still struggle with that basic challenge to create characters that feel compelling and real, grounded in and aware of the world around them, and believably "alive." Often the "magic" we need to breathe life into our characters is contained in simple techniques that lie outside the bounds of typical "make the right decision" AI. In this talk we discuss methods to design and build characters that meet these challenges without breaking the budget!
