Overview: Ed Catmull once referred to new ideas as ugly babies that have to be shielded from the great unblinking eye of the business organisation. While we agree that a purely data-driven approach to game design can stifle innovation, the data teams still have a huge amount of knowledge and expertise to help designers create and evolve game mechanics. In this talk we describe how we shifted towards Data-Informed Game Design, where data scientists work alongside designers to help make sure that crazy new features have the best chance of succeeding when released to the player base. To illustrate this, we will examine a case study in Farm Heroes Saga, in which an audacious change to the core game mechanic was only made possible through close collaboration with the data teams.
