Overview: Emotion is important in our lives, as it is in game design. We understand that offering an emotional experience is key to engaging our players. However, we don't necessarily truly understand what emotion is, and how it can be applied to games, especially with all the myths and pseudoscience circulating on the topic. This talk proposes a scientific approach on emotion, and how to use it to delight and engage your players. In the context of a game UX mindset, we will also explore the components of emotion (such as game feel and surprises) and explain how it supports motivation to hopefully offer an improved game experience to your audience. It will also touch on some ethics considerations (as regards to monetization and the "attention economy").Emma Kidwell, Freelance Narrative Designer of Gamasutra, will be joining this session as moderator.
