This Level Design Tutorial will cover the basics of level design, including layout, flow, pacing, cinematography, and narrative. The speakers will draw from their expertise in developing narrative-focused games to demonstrate how techniques used in storytelling can be applied these basics to create engaging levels for all genres of games. Examples from a variety of well-known titles will be used to illustrate these concepts, as well as games from the speakers' own portfolios, including Mafia III, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and award-winning titles Hyper Light Drifter, The Walking Dead, A Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, and Pirates of the Caribbean Online. This tutorial is aimed at anyone interested in the techniques and approaches used for level design for games in Western game development studios, and concepts are distilled to convey lessons which can be adapted to any game or team.
