Overview: There were more than 10,000 games released on steam alone in 2020. With numbers like that it is incredibly difficult to make money exclusively on sales, and the idea funding future projects with sales of prior games becomes ever more fantastical. Unless you wind up with a hit on your hands, it's incredibly difficult to survive as an independent game developer.
