Overview: This session will describe a design framework that provides a new way to think about narrative and gameplay. Instead of trying to craft gameplay that directly provides an engaging narrative, this approach allows one to solve the problem incrementally. The idea is to build a gameplay sequence by using layers of story elements. One starts by making sure the gameplay works and then adds narrative aspects afterward. Approaching the design in this manner allows for a much denser narrative experience. The end result is the sensation of playing a story, rather than progressing through a series of gameplay sections.
