Overview: Even in 2022, women remain a minority group in the video game industry. Amongst that group, there is an even smaller minority as well - mothers. Previously, becoming a mom might have meant abandoning a career entirely due to the challenges in balancing the demands of an intense industry with the demands of intense tiny humans. Although gender roles continue to evolve, the reality within many households is still that women carry the majority of the household emotional and physical labour, as well as parenting time. In this panel discussion, 5 (4 panelists + moderator) working mothers in the games industry - from different companies, with different family structures, who have or have not taken maternity leave - will provide a variety of perspectives on what has been challenging, what has worked well for them, how studios adapted to support them, and where things have failed.
