Overview: |
As emergent and procedural gameplay is increasingly embraced, game audio technology needs to evolve to keep pace. Along with conventional sound design, 'No Man's Sky' features an innovative vocal modeling synthesizer plugin and a custom built generative music system to provide a varied and reactive in-game soundtrack. This talk will analyze the motivation behind the procedural audio experimentation and will describe in detail how we built VocAlien, our physically modeled vocal tract synthesis plugin and the challenges in creating an end-to-end procedural audio pipeline. The title also heavily relies on the use of a custom generative music system which is deeply embedded within the game logic. Along with demonstrating the tool, Paul will discuss the creative implications and how the band 65 Days of Static were able to both compose a traditional album and create generative soundscapes without compromising their sound. |
