Overview: The rise of immersive sound for XR applications has spawned a paradigm shift from utilizing audio as an emotive source to that of delivering information. When designing immersive experiences, directional sound is integral to ensure accuracy and retention on assignment. Psychoacoustic theory and UX/UI design principles influence the development of auditory events in an experience. Virtual and augmented reality allow for more immersive and real-time experiences that situate the individual in a unique simulation that would be difficult to replicate in real life. Using several case studies, we will demonstrate how sound can integrate with existing systems to create a more intuitive user experience.
